Former Forbes.com publisher Jim Spanfeller has a new gig: A venture-backed Web publishing start-up. Spanfeller Media Group, which plans to launch a series of new sites, is close to finishing a funding round that I'm told will total around $2 million.

The competition to build a better e-book reader is heating up this summer. Amazon just cut the price of its best-selling Kindle from $259 to $189 to keep up with Barnes & Noble, which slashed the price of its e-reader, the Nook, from $259 to $199. Each company is feeling the heat from Apple's technologically superior iPad ($499 and up).

On the web today, things change fast. New applications launch every day and existing applications continue to evolve and add new features.
